Understanding Protein — Why It Matters

Not all proteins are equal. The protein source determines calorie density, fat content, digestibility, and allergy risk. Here is a quick guide to every protein we use at Pet's Kitchen.

Chicken
The all-rounder — lean, digestible, familiar
Chicken is our most popular protein and a great everyday choice for healthy dogs with no specific concerns. It is lean, highly digestible, and an excellent source of B vitamins. Not ideal for dogs with chicken sensitivities, which are relatively common in dogs previously fed chicken-based diets.
LeanDigestibleAll life stages
Beef
Rich and calorie-dense — best for active dogs
Beef is higher in protein, natural fats, iron, and zinc than most other proteins. It provides excellent caloric density for active, sporting, or working dogs. Higher fat content makes it less suitable for weight management or dogs with pancreatitis history.

Kangaroo
The hypoallergenic choice — wild, lean, novel
Wild-harvested Australian kangaroo is one of the most hypoallergenic proteins available. Most dogs have never been exposed to it, making it ideal for allergy management and elimination diets. It is also one of the leanest proteins we stock — very low in fat and calories, excellent for weight loss.
Novel proteinVery leanAllergiesWeight management
Turkey
Lean and calming — great for sensitive dogs
Turkey is a lean, novel protein that most Australian dogs have not eaten before, making it a reliable choice for food sensitivities. It is high in tryptophan, which supports serotonin production and can help promote calm behaviour. Well suited to anxious or reactive dogs.
Novel proteinLeanSensitive stomachsCalm behaviour
Duck
Novel and nourishing — supports skin and coat
Duck is a novel protein with natural fats that are particularly beneficial for skin and coat health. It is lean in our preparation but contains enough natural lipids to support a glossy coat. A great rotation protein for dogs with sensitivities who also have skin concerns.

Venison
Wild game — lean, clean, and rarely allergenic
Wild-harvested venison is an extremely lean novel protein with very low fat content. It is rarely implicated in food allergies and is an excellent choice for dogs on elimination diets or those needing a low-fat, high-protein option. Very similar in nutritional profile to kangaroo.
Novel proteinVery leanLow fatAllergies
Goat
Highly digestible — ideal for complex sensitivities
Goat is one of the most digestible red meats available and is rarely associated with food intolerances. It is lean, gentle on the digestive system, and an excellent choice for dogs with multiple food sensitivities who have exhausted other novel proteins. A good option for senior dogs.

Seafood
Omega-3 powerhouse — best for skin, coat, and joints
Our seafood blend of salmon and sardine is the richest source of omega-3 fatty acids in our range. Omega-3s have proven anti-inflammatory benefits, making seafood the top choice for dogs with itchy skin, poor coat condition, or joint stiffness. Also a novel protein for many dogs. Best fed 2 to 3 times per week as part of a rotation.
